 Men's Basketball Coach Inducted in 1999 Former UVSC head coach Duke Reid passed away October 5, 2001, in his hometown of Springville, Utah, as a result of an automobile-pedestrian accident. A renowned high school and college coach, Duke Reid left a mark on the basketball world at UVSC. He began coaching the Wolverines in 1986, and eight years later became UVSC's all-time winningest coach. He accumulated a record of 175 wins and 82 losses, winning 20 or more six times in his eight years at the helm of the program. His 1988-89 team holds UVSC's best record ever at 29-5. He retired from UVSC in 1994. Before coming to UVSC Reid coached on the high school level at Brighton High in Salt Lake City, running up an impressive 190-75 record in nine years. He won state titles in 1984 and 1986, and was runner-up in 1985. Prior to that he coached at South Summit for three years and Juab for ten. His overall high school record was 324-114. Reid was a graduate of Springville High, and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in physical education from BYU. One of the most highly respected coaches in the Utah high school and collegiate ranks, Reid established a tradition of success wherever he went. His son, Todd, played college hoop for Dixie and UVSC. His nephews Darren, Randy and Robbie Reid played for UVSC, BYU and Michigan. His brother, Roger, was head coach at BYU and an assistant with the Phoenix Suns in the NBA. Duke and his wife, Joan, lived in Salt Lake City, Utah. Duke was a local Utah County product, a graduate of Springville High School. He was an All-State athlete at Springville, and also served as student body president. He went on to play basketball on the freshman team at Brigham Young University. Duke was inducted into the UVSC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. He was also an inductee in the Utah Coaches Hall of Fame. |
