Baker Breaks School Record
April 26, 2008
PROVO, Utah - After nearly breaking the Utah Valley women's 400 meter record on numerous occasions this season, freshman Chelsea Baker beat the mark by nearly a full second as the Wolverine sprinters highlighted a strong day at the BYU Robinson Invitational. Baker, a freshman from South Jordan, Utah, broke the seven-year-old record with a time of 56.60 in the finals of the race after posting a strong time of 57.91. The record previous mark was 57.39 set in 2001 by Alexandra Jo. A fellow Utah Valley women's sprint record holder Mariama Salifu once again had a stellar day on the track as she won both the 100 meter and 200 meter races. Salifu had a time of 11.75 in the 100 and 24.41 in the 200. Both marks were close to her own school records in each event. Baker was also part of a second school record as the women's 1600 meter relay team posted a new top school mark. Baker's running mates were Amy Poll, Jessica Wortley and Tiera Zaugg. On the men's side, junior Brandon Lovell had a strong showing in the men's 400 meters. Lovell's 48.74 in the preliminaries advanced him to the finals where he finished with a mark of 48.68. Utah Valley will next compete in the dual meet against Southern Utah on May 3. |
