Nelson's Hole-in-One Highlights Day One in Arizona

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Utah Valley golfer Nick Nelson's hole-in-one on the par three 11th hole highlighted the opening day of the of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was the first hole-in-one in the tournament's six-year history and it helped Nelson to an opening round of 3-under, 67. Nelson, fresh off of a third place finish at the Cal Poly Intercollegiate last week, shot a 74 in the second round and is +1 overall and in a tie for 26th place. As at team Utah Valley shot a 584 and in 17th place, four shots back of Texas-Pan American. The team competition is cluttered in the middle, with 12 teams ranging from sixth place to 17th within 19 strokes. Grand Canyon University leads defending champion UC Davis by four strokes with Davis' Nate Pistacchio tied with Paul Peterson of Oregon State for first place at -6. Adam Tayler (+6, t-74), Jeff Gibson (+8, t-84), Andrew Smith (+9, t-94) and Brad Bills (+15, t-114) rounding out the Wolverines' scores. The final 18 holes will take place beginning Tuesday morning. |
