Feb. 23, 2008

Box Score

CHICAGO - Chicago State used a 19-2 run that spanned the end of the first half and the first five minutes of the second half to run away from Utah Valley 86-60 on Saturday afternoon in Chicago.

The Wolverines (15-9) trailed 36-29 when Zondranika Williams hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds left in the first half to put the Cougars (14-12) up 39-29 at the break. CSU then started the second half on a 16-2 run to take a 55-31 lead that they eventually stretched to 30, 68-38, with just under 12 minutes remaining.

Julie McMurray led Utah Valley with 15 points while Robyn Fairbanks was limited to 14 points, her lowest output since a 12-point night on December 1st at Air Force. Sandy Marvin had 12 to round out the three Wolverines in double figures and Jordyn Bowen chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.

Jasmin Dixon led all scorers with 23 points, 14 of which came in the second half. She also had seven assists, six rebounds, four blocks and three steals while Nicole Clark had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Cougars, who moved to 2-0 all-time against the Wolverines.

Courtney Waldon was huge in the first half for CSU, scoring 13 points on the strength of three three-pointers in helping the Cougars to their 10 points lead at the break. Williams, a senior who was playing in her final home game, finished with 15 points.

Chicago State shot 47.9 percent compared to 40.3 percent by UV. CSU also won the rebounding battle 46-34 while turning the ball over 11 times with the Wolverines committing 17 turnovers.

Utah Valley has now lost eight straight road games and may or may not play another road game this season. They'll be one of six teams playing at the Division I Independent Championship in Edinburg, Texas from March 6-8. If the Wolverines don't play host Texas-Pan American during the three-day tournament, Saturday's game will have been their final road game of the season.

Utah Valley will host CSU Bakersfield next Saturday, March 1st at 3:05pm MT on Senior Day. It will be the final home game for seniors Susie Cornejo and Rebekah Peterson. The men's team will also host Bakersfield that night at 7:05pm.
