Wolverines Split Doubleheader With Bears

April 28, 2008

Game One Box - Game Two Box

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley's bats came alive in a 10-2, six inning win over Northern Colorado in the first game of a Monday doubleheader at MSTAR Field. The Wolverines (12-30) pounded out 14 hits and won their fourth straight game in the opener before the Bears (14-35) limited UV to two hits to end the streak and win the nightcap 7-2.

Leadoff hitter Meghan Woodworth led UV as she went 4-for-4, scored three runs and drove in two runs in game number one. Slugger Heidi Stocks supplied the power as she hit her ninth home run of the season and finished going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Cherylyn McGraw, Jessica Anderson, and Kylee Steadman all had two hits in the first game as well to help propel the Wolverines to the victory.

Alli Bramwell (10-13) went the distance as she pitched six strong innings scattering five hits and only allowing one earned run while striking out six.

With out in the second, Utah Valley had seven straight hitters reach base capped by Stocks' two-run blast. Woodworth had a two-run double in the inning while McGraw also had an RBI in the decisive inning.

After McGraw drove in her second run of the game on a groundout in the fifth, Anderson led off the sixth with a double and Steadman ended the game with an RBI single into left.

In the second game of the double dip, Bears starter Kelli Henderson allowed just two hits to lead UNC to the 7-2 victory. Henderson struggled to find the zone, allowing eight walks, but stranded seven Wolverines on the base paths to earn her fourth win of the year.

Courtney Maihi led UNC going 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and a double. Henderson helped herself out from the plate as she had two hits on two doubles and two runs scored. Jessie Schoepflin added two hits of her own while Kelley Johns hit her third homer of the season for the Bears.

Natalie Nance was the pitcher of record for UV, taking the loss, as she went four and 2/3 on the mound allowing five earned runs on nine hits. The only two hits of the game for the Wolverines were both hit by the nine-hole batter Magan Niemann as she broke up the no hitter in the fifth with a well placed bunt single and also doubled in the seventh.

The Wolverines will continue their home stand with the second half of the four-game series against Northern Colorado with another double header Wednesday April 30 at noon. UV will also host Cal State Bakersfield this weekend for a four-game series with consecutive double headers Friday May 2nd and Saturday May 3rd.
