Six Homers, Two Wins for UVU

May 2, 2008

Game 1 box - Game 2 box

Six homeruns led to 12 runs in two wins for the Utah Valley University women's softball team Friday in a double header against Cal State Bakersfield as the Wolverines topped the Runners 6-4 in the first game and 6-1 in the second. UVU jumped to 14-32 on the season while CSUB fell to 22-23.

Juniors Lauren Augino and Kylee Steadman each hit their first two bombs of the season while sophomores Jessica Anderson and Cherylyn McGraw each hit their third on the year. All 12 runs scored on homeruns.

Sophomore pitcher Alli Bramwell threw both games and gave up a total of five runs on 14 hits in 14 innings, improving her record to 12-14 this season.

"I thought we played two solid games today," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "I really think those were our two best games against a quality opponent. Hopefully we can play that well, regardless of the win or loss, tomorrow."

The Wolverines fell behind 3-0 in the first inning of the first game, but came back to score five in the bottom of the first to take a lead the team would not give up. McGraw hit a three-run shot in the inning to tie the game, and Steadman hit her first homer, a two-run shot, just three batters later. Augino hit a solo homerun in the fourth to add an insurance run.

The second game started slow offensively for both teams. The game was knotted at 0-0 through two and two-thirds innings until Utah Valley went on a two out rally that featured six runs with eight consecutive batters reaching safely and seven hits.

McGraw started the rally with a double, junior Heidi Stocks then walked, and both batters were brought home on a three-run dinger from Anderson. Steadman hit her second homerun right after that to boost the lead to 4-0, and junior Shelly Manuel then singled. Augino followed with her second homer of the day, this one a two-run shot to left field. Two more batters hit singles in the inning before CSUB recorded the final out of the inning.

Six total strikeouts were recorded on the day between the two teams, five for the Wolverines and only one for the Runners.

The same two teams will meet each other again Saturday in another double header with start times set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Senior Sara Roskelley will be honored prior to the start of the first game.
